Last Wednesday evening, our Men’s 1sts played their last game of the season against local rivals Aberdeen Grammar at Hillhead. The first game finished 1-1, so another tight contest was expected.
Grammar took an early lead from their first short corner. James Denholm, making his debut in goal for the 1s, saved the initial effort, but it wasn’t enough to keep the ball out. Grammar had settled into the early stages better, but GCW fought back, and were rewarded with a goal through Josh McLean from close range after some quick thinking down the left. With the rain pouring down, the game hung in the balance, but McLean found the finishing touch again from close range to give GCW a 2-1 lead at the break.
It was not a good night for injuries as Russ Heron twisted an ankle and could play no further part, and Rory Jamieson also had to spend some time on the sideline with an achilles injury. Despite the shuffling of the backline, GCW started the second half stronger and there was a period of control for GCW, who had opportunities to extend their lead, but Grammar were not done yet. A pass inside found a Grammar attacker in space with an opportunity to drive into the circle. Despite Leon Wilkie’s best efforts, that Grammar attacker was able to find the bottom corner to bring the score to 2-2.
With 15 minutes left, the game started to open up a little, and a good counter attack from GCW brought an opportunity in the circle. The Grammar keeper was able to stop the first effort, but the ball looped into the air, and McLean again found himself in the right place to volley the ball into the net to complete his hat-trick and make it 3-2. Grammar threw players forward looking for another equaliser, but GCW were able to limit opportunities and see the game out for a good win and a happy end to the season.
Thanks to those GCW supporters who braved what was a filthy night. Your encouragement was much appreciated! Let’s hope that our guys can start next season like they have finished this one.
