Cooler temperatures are fast approaching however that doesn’t mean hockey is stopping. If anything its hotting up with eight of our teams playing this weekend followed by our first social of the 2017/2018 season. In case you haven’t heard, on Saturday it’s our New Members Night at 7:30pm at the Sportsmans Club on Queens Road. Everyone including partners, friends and cheerleaders is invited, and the idea is that it’s a chance for our newer members to meet existing members, so get along and say hello!
Saturday’s game of the day has to be the National League 2 derby for our Men’s 1s versus neighbours Gordonians 1s at ASV 3pm; the men fresh from picking up 3 points last weekend to kick start the season will face Gordonians who have a 100% win record in the league this season. Brothers Thomas and James Morrison go head to head. Spare a thought for Mrs Morrison on the sideline, and keep an eye out to make sure she’s supporting the underdogs.
Despite some improving performances and excellent hockey in the middle of the pitch, our Ladies 1s are still looking for their first win of the season. The squad welcome Dundee University to ASV on Saturday hoping to be more clinical in front of goal and 3 points.
Tomorrow also sees our Men’s 2s get under way in the league against Grammar 2s in what should be a good contest. With just one cup outing so far this season, Jamie Howell’s squad will hope to settle quickly against a squad who were too strong for our 3s last weekend.
Sunday’s game of the day is our club derby between our Ladies 2s and 3s who get the early slot at ASV so hopefully its early to bed with the social on Saturday night! Rumours of 3s captain Jess Walker planning to buy rounds for the 2s on Saturday night are yet to be confirmed.
Our Men’s 4s recorded a good win last week and have the late shift at ASV on Sunday welcoming Aberdeen Tigers. Neil Edward’s charges should start this one as slight favourites, but the form of the Tigers is hard to predict.
There is another game for our Men’s 5s against a usually youthful Gordonians 5s team, while our new Ladies 5s team continue their adventures in action against Hazlehead.
Also on Sunday our Girls Under 18 squad travels down to Edinburgh to play Inverleith and Borders at Peffermill. Coming so soon after the inter district tournament where many of GCW players were involved, our youngsters will be look forward to the challenge in club colours.
With three games back to back on Saturday at ASV followed by a social, get along and cheer on the girls and guys!
