No Holiday Weekend for GCW

This coming weekend is an Aberdeen holiday weekend so we should all be enjoying the fun of the seaside or the hills. Not of you are a GCW hockey player however as we have 7 of our 8 teams playing this weekend. Now this little problem has caused a few issues and if you r captain are looking a bit weary come Saturday give them a break. In addition to the Holiday weekend there is the issue of Duke of Edinburgh for some of our players and those who returned from Inter district weekend seem to have caught a cold bug from the freezing South.

Despite all of this we are still on. The Ladies 1s lead the way with a game in Edinburgh against Grange. Grange were in National League 1 last season so no doubt this will be a good test for game 1 of the season. Another little fact is that Emily Watson included in the picture above is scheduled to play against  GCW tomorrow, we wish her well, for the rest of the season and not tomorrow of course..

The ladies 2s and 3s are at Hillhead tomorrow taking on Aberdeen Grammar and Ellon respectively as the Division 1 programme gets underway. On Sunday the 4s and 5s have their turn with each playing their second match of the season. The 4s take on Grammar 2s and the 5s face Highland both at Aberdeen Sports Village.

On the men’s side Doug Soden takes the men’s 1s to Aberdeen Sports Village on Saturday to face Harris. They will be hoping to start their Division 3 programme in a positive manner. The men’s 2s are up at Countesswells against Gordonians 4s. Oh and even the men’s 3s who have the weekend off are busy with players helping other squads and umpiring duties to be fulfilled.

As ever good luck one and all and let’s hope for another weekend of positive results.

Competition Begins and Age is No barrier

The phoney war of warm ups and friendlies is finally over for season 2019/20 and the competition begins. Certainly the 19 youngsters off to the Inter District this weekend are fully aware of this as they battle over the weekend flying the North Flag. Back in Aberdeen league games get underway.

Saturday sees the men’s 1s take on Aberdeen Uni in their final pre season friendly. On Sunday league action takes over with the men’s 2s taking on Gordonians 3s at ASV  at 1.30pm and the men’s 3s taking on Aberdeen 2s at Rubislaw at 3pm.

On the girls side the Ladies 4s take on Bon Accord 2s at Cults at 12.30 on Sunday and the Ladies 5s take on Aberdeen 2s at Rubislaw at 12 noon.

Some new faces will make their first appearance for the club this weekend as well as some older ones. Alan Strachan starts his umpteenth season of which we all only hope we can match whilst at the other end of the scale Vhairi McLeod and Emma Cavanagh make their league debuts.

We wish you all well and some positive results.

Inter District Weekend Ahead

This weekend sees the annual Inter District Tournament for boys and girls aged under 16 and under 18. The tournament has this year been brought forward from its usual late September date.

The girls tournament will take place in Edinburgh at Peffermill and Granite City have a sizeable contingent going down. The U16s squad includes Connie Hatfield, Heather Hunter, Evie Laszlo, Katy Thomson and Sarah Anderson. Interestingly enough the five girls come from 5 different schools.

The U18s has a higher representation with 11 girls. In addition to the 3 internationalists Jess Barr, Eilidh Seedhouse and Jen Tait also in the squad are Zoe Bradford, Tony Dawson, Kirsty Jack, Anna Lewis, Ellie Lewis, Holly Miller, Grace Morrison and Martha Sheal. The girls come from 3 different schools

Sadly North District are not entering a boys team but a Highland team have selected some North boys and William Strachan has been included in their squad.

I know we all wish the youngsters well and hope they come home healthy and happy, a goal or two each would also be nice..

Bright Start at the Futures Cup

Scotland U16 Girls got off to a bright start at the Futures Cup in St Albans with a 3-1 win. Adding to the sunny aspect of the day was a goal from our own Jess Barr.

As can also be see from the photograph International Hockey has it's bright spots.
