Sunday the 4th June was the first date for some Under 14 club action in Stirling to be followed next Saturday 10th June in Ellon. Most of the youngsters who travelled were experiencing their first club action outside of Aberdeen and they certainly acquitted themselves well. Saturday was the busy day with two call offs and wit ha no show on the Sunday the squad was whittled down to 10 for the 8 a side games. The good news about this was that they all got enough pitch time to go home a little tired.
The games were 20 minutes one way and there were two groups of four. In the GCW group were Borders, Stirling and Watsonians. First up was a game against Borders Reivers. The game started brightly and when Ellen Clow popped up to put the side ahead early all looked rosy. However a somewhat messy goal led to a Borders equaliser. The rest of the game was GCW pressure but could they finish. It took Amy Simmers to take the matter in hand and twice netted to ensure the game finished 3-1 to GCW.
Second up was a somewhat robust Stirling side. The home side went 1-0 up early on as the GCW youngsters came to terms with the physicality. However come to terms with It they did and watching Lucy Carton bounce off a deliberate elbow to still win the ball showed the determination of the youngsters. It did not take too ling when Amy Simmers decided enough was enough to insist on a pass from William Strachan before netting the equaliser Despite the changes coach Ali Gentilucci made the winning goal would not come but GCW certainly finished the stronger.
Game 3 was against the group favourites Watsonians who had come into the game after two very heavy wins. Tan early goal looked ominous but a stout defensive display and a couple of fine saves from Una McGee in goal it was still only 1-0 as we entered the last 4 minutes. However the ball was stolen in midfield and the Watsons forward neatly rounded the keeper to net the second. The GCW squad dropped their heads a bit and ended up losing out 4-0.
This meant a second place finish in the group and a game in the 3rd and 4th place playoff against Quasar. Well playoff is probably not true as despite the efforts of both teams the game ended in a 0-0 draw and a share of 3rd place. Highlight of the day was William Strachan receiving hair advice from the girls about his quiff, apparently it was just not good enough.
This weekend sees a slightly different squad take on a tournament in Ellon form 10-1pm so get along and watch. Also that day we shall have the GCW U12s playing their second games in a month at the same venue.
Thanks to Ali G for coaching and all the parents who supported and drove the youngsters there.
