The big freeze and Mad Friday could not stop the GCW squads getting their quota of indoor hockey this weekend. There were games for all three girls squads and a decent amount of success was had by all.
Thursday saw the start with the seconds taking on Aberdeen Ladies in their latest league match. A fairly comfortable victory for the girls was set up by the first goal from Shiona Brough who rifled a flick into the roof of the net from a corner. The girls finally went on to win 5-1.
Saturday again featured the 2s first up and the opposition this time was to be Ellen. A 5-0 victory to make it 5 straight wins in a row and the first indoor shut out for Jess Walker in goal. Second up on Saturday were the 3s who up to date have played without a keeper and won all their games. Despite dominating their opposition the finishing left a lot to be desired and proved to be costly in the end as Hazlehead ran out 2-1 winners.
Sunday and it was off to Stirling again for the Ladies firsts. The first game of the day was against Uddingston who the girls defeated 6-0 the week previous. The girls did not hang about and Lsia Clyne took a leaf from Shiona Brough’s book and was matched with flicks from Eilidh Seedhouse and Jess Barr. The final score was to be 7-1 although the delighted surprise on Katy Smith’s face following her goal might have led spectators to think the game was closer.
Final game of the weekend for the firsts was a rematch of the previous week’s match against Perthshire. The game started well and in ten minutes a lead of 1-0 was established. The girls however got a bit slack in their efforts to increase the lead and conceded the equaliser. Just before half time ad the tone for the rest of the game was set. GCW pressing and then on the counter attack conceding a corner which the Perth outfit converted.
The rest of the match followed this pattern and despite using a kicking back for the last 5 minutes the game again was edged 4-3 in favour of Perthshire
