The first competitive matches for the Ladies 1s in 2018 were to prove crucial in their aim of winning National Indoor League 3. A return to Dundee University brought back memories of the ladies first ever National Indoor title some 10 years previous.
The first game up was a must win match against league leaders Perthshire Ladies. The two previous encounters this season had been edged out by the Perth side so a win was essential to any title hopes. A squad of eleven girls travelled mixing youth and experience in an attempt to make up for previous scores.
The game started as the two previous encounters with GCW pressing hard and creating chances. Similar to both the previous games GCW took the lead when Katy Smith forced home a shot. Unlike previous matches however the GCW short corner defence held firm with Ciara Athawes bringing off two fine early saves with her gloves. The girls took confidence from this and scored twice more before halftime to go in with a comfortable 3-0 lead. Perthshire scored five minutes into the second half to give them hope but the GCW girls were never to be denied and eventually ran out 5-2 victors.
The second match up was the first time the girls had faced Stirling Wanderers this season. The Stirling side had only 6 players due to an injury in their first game and the GCW bench proved too strong. 10 minutes into the game GCW were 2-0 up but stuttering, a change to a kicking back did the trick and the side became a more free flowing unit and ran out 11-2 victors on the day. To top the day off Perthshire also lost to Uddingson 3-2 in their second match.
The league now sits with GCW top on goal difference with three matches to play, Perthshire have two further matches to play so a solid Sunday this weekend is required for a happy end to the season and a deserved title win.
Whilst their elders were winning in the National League GCW also had 14 youngsters out at the U12s at Cults Academy. The youngsters performed well under the tutelage or Esther Walterson, Alastair Hunter and Stacey Ashowrth thanks to all three for their help.
