After starting their National 3 league campaign with a 3-0 win over Harris last week, Doug Soden’s Men in Black faced their first away trip of the season. Monarchs the opponents, potentially a tricky tie after they finished runners up in the league last year. The squad of 14 included the closed seasons new arrivals of Callum Hill, Tom Brawley and Luis Fraser and youngsters William Strachan and Archie Robb
The lads started strong and within 40 seconds had called the Monarchs keeper in to action. A minute later Neil Morton Lloyd (NML) rode what can be described as 3 STRONG tackles to make the keeper bring off a fantastic save, the cleared ball was deemed to be dangerous and it brought up GCWs 1st corner of the game. A straight forward drag flick from Calum Hill hit the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. On 8 minutes NML broke free for a one on one with the keeper. From the resultant long corner NML was first to react to the ball for a deflection in to the goal to double the lead. A calmer 15 minutes followed with Monarchs tightened their defence and tackling strong. At 21 mins Monarchs pulled a goal back to make it 2-1. On 26 mins Josh Laurence was deliberately fouled in the D. Josh slotted home the resulting penalty flick to restore GCWs 2 goal lead. Two minutes later a ball into the D form left back Luis Fraser found NML who finished to put GCW 4-1 up at the half way point.
Monarchs regrouped at the break and started the second half with vigour ! But on 42 mins Calum Hill picked up a ball at top D, moved to his right beating 2 defenders and finishing in the top corner over the keepers left shoulder. From the restart Monarchs pulled a goal back with GCW defence caught napping. A few more chances for GC followed but they were unable to convert and with 15 minutes left on the clock Monarchs found the net again to make it 5-3 to GCW. With 9 minutes to play Tom Brawley, on his debut, picked up a harsh 10 min yellow. GC adjusted and played out the game with 10 men to bring home the points.
Luis Fraser was voted man of match for his efforts in defence.
