Men's 1sts in the Black

Our Men’s 1sts travelled to Dundee on Saturday to play Harris. Both sides had made a slow start to the season, and were hungry for some points.

It was Harris who struck first with a close range finish. 1-0 down, Josh Lawrence’s men responded well, and were awarded a batch of penalty corner opportunities, but none of these was taken until Harry Leggett scored from the second phase of a corner after 20 minutes.  Skipper Lawrence then doubled GCW’s score from the spot 5 minutes later as GCW started to find their stride.  However, just before the break Harris equalised with a shot from the top of the circle to make it 2-2.

Despite having plenty of chances in the second half, GCW scored just one more goal, Lawrence striking the ball into the bottom corner from a rebound. Harris threatened occasionally, but the away defence was more composed in the second period, and it finished 3-2 to GCW.  This was not a pretty performance, but GCW will be happy to have gathered three points away from home.

It was a first game of the season for our Men’s 3rds against Aberdeen Grammar 2nds. Grammar were stronger throughout, but GCW’s limited squad all showed plenty of application and played some good hockey in patches.  Grammar’s second string managed to score 8, and GCW responded with just one goal through Max Lynch.

Our Men’s 4ths put together a fine performance and were too strong for Aberdeen Uni 4s. GCW finished 8-0 winners with seven different scorers: Paul Boylan, Derek Wood, Neil Edward, Jamie Howell, Bryan Snelling, Archie Robb and two for Ryan Taylor.

Liam Wedekind’s 5ths squad faced one of the division favourites in Aberdeenshire South. Despite some improving hockey, GCW could not plug all the gaps and finished 7-0 down.
