Indoor the Place to Be

The big freeze and Mad Friday could not stop the GCW squads getting their quota of indoor hockey this weekend. There were games for all three girls squads and a decent amount of success was had by all.

Thursday saw the start with the seconds taking on Aberdeen Ladies in their latest league match. A fairly comfortable victory for the girls was set up by the first goal from Shiona Brough who rifled a flick into the roof of the net from a corner. The girls finally went on to win 5-1.

Saturday again featured the 2s first up and the opposition this time was to be Ellen. A 5-0 victory to make it 5 straight wins in a row and the first indoor shut out for Jess Walker in goal. Second up on Saturday were the 3s who up to date have played without a keeper and won all their games. Despite dominating their opposition the finishing left a lot to be desired and proved to be costly in the end as Hazlehead ran out 2-1 winners.

Sunday and it was off to Stirling again for the Ladies firsts. The first game of the day was against Uddingston who the girls defeated 6-0 the week previous. The girls did not hang about and Lsia Clyne took a leaf from Shiona Brough’s book and was matched with flicks from Eilidh Seedhouse and Jess Barr. The final score was to be 7-1 although the delighted surprise on Katy Smith’s face following her goal might have led spectators to think the game was closer.

Final game of the weekend for the firsts was a rematch of the previous week’s match against Perthshire. The game started well and in ten minutes a lead of 1-0 was established. The girls however got a bit slack in their efforts to increase the lead and conceded the equaliser. Just before half time ad the tone for the rest of the game was set. GCW pressing and then on the counter attack conceding a corner which the Perth outfit converted.

The rest of the match followed this pattern and despite using a kicking back for the last 5 minutes the game again was edged 4-3 in favour of Perthshire

Indoor Galore

The first week in December and it was the official start of the Women’s Indoor District League. GCW had both our 2s and 3s out on Saturday.

First up was the girls 3s who featured newcomers Eve Sheal, Sarah Anderson and Heather Curry plus the return of “experienced” kicking back Janet Graham. The new look side took a while to settle but two minutes from half time they got the goal that put them ahead going into the break. A little comforting chat and a slight change in style and the second half proved a better return for their efforts. The final score was 6-1 and the sixth was a picture of beauty passed amongst all the players from back to front before a simple tap in.

Two hours later and the first of two matches for GCW 2s took place. It was a little strange as the opposition was the North U18 side of which most were GCW players. The GCW side however may have been light on youngsters but heavy on experience. This somewhat unusual “derby” game went 4-0 to the GCW 2s to prove never to under estimate the value of experience.

The GCW2s second game was against Grammar 1s which is always a tight affair. This game was no different but the result went the way of the GCW 2s. Goals from Emily Watson and a fine flick from a corner by Shiona Brough were enough to settle the game 2-1. A nervy finish but the GCW girls held out for a deserved victory and a promising start to the new season.

Sunday saw the U14s mixed indoor take place at Cults Academy. GCW had 4 sides involved (26 players in total) against sides from Gordonans, Quasar and South Aberdeenshire. A very successful morning with lots of wins and several new face making their indoor debuts. Thanks to Jen Tait for helping with the coaching in the morning and stealing a game or two as well.
