The ladies firsts had their opening weekend of National Indoor League this weekend and came back from the trip to Stirling with two solid victories. The squad was minus Shiona Brough through injury but she still came down for an afternoon of goal scoring entertainment.

First game on was Watsonians who seem to be struggling a bit this season and turned up with 6 players and no hockey balls. The GCW girls decided to set about the Watsons girls right from the off and were 4 goals up by half time. Some strong running from Siobhan Anthony and Jo Thomas upfront left spaces for Jenny Thompson to exploit. The second half saw no let up by the GCW girls and the final score was 8-1, the best possible start to the season. The most memorable goal of the game being a "Hazy Mazy" from Hazel Irvine who beat three players and popped it past the keeper for the final goal of the game.

The second game of the day had the girls up against newly promoted Glynhill Kelburne. When the two sides met in NL3 the games were always tight with the GCW girls just edging to victory in both matches. However this GCW side were in no mood for fond memories and set about the well structured Kelburne side and were ahead 6-0 by half time pick of the bunch being a trademark Gammack flick which flew high into the net.The downside of the half was a hand injury to Jo Thomas which left a major question mark over whether she could continue.

The second half saw a closer game but the GCW girls continued their scoring streak to end up 10-4 victors, a score much helped by some fine positive keeping from Siobhan Cowie. Jo Thomas came off the bench to show that even a potentially broken hand was not going to keep her off the scoresheet.

All in all a fine opening day with plenty to be positive about, oh and by the way Jenny scored six throughout the day so is unlikely to get another pass all season. Keep up the good work girls.
