Saturday the 12th December saw the Granite City Wanderers girls take part in the North District Indoor Cup, the winners and runners up in this competition go through to the national qualifiers at Bells in Perth on the 16th January.  GCW were able this season to submit two sides in the competition, using the second side to provide valuable experience for future seasons.

The GCW senior team defeated the junior side in the first match to set the pace.  Robert Gordons College then beat Aberdeen Grammar and the GCW junior side although not without a scare as the GCW squad took an early lead.  The next match was between RGC and GCW's more experienced squad with RGC having already secured their place in Perth this was to prove the game that would decide who would be North champions in 2009.  The game was nip and tuck all the way with GCW leading 3-2 in  the latter stages of the game, however the girls could not hold out until the end and the RGC squad managed to edge the victory 4-3.

The second last game saw Aberdeen Grammar win narrowly 2-1 over the GCW junior squad and this meant that the last fixture of the day between GCW and Aberdeen Grammar would decide who would take the second qualifying spot.  The GCW girls only needed a draw but the match proved to be a scrappy affair with the GCW girls edging out the Grammar squad 2-1.

This means that the girls go to the Perth qualifiers for the second time in three seasons.  Main highlight of the day was some excellent tackling by Frances Livera showing that if you tackle properly indoor it is the opponent who loses control and their footing.

Thanks go to Jenny and Janine for coaching and umpiring and Chris for helping out on the day.
