After the disappointment of losing both games the previous week the girls firsts got back on track with two fine wins in the Indoor National League 2.The GCW squad was 10 strong expecting to play three games in the day but this proved not to be the case as Aberdeen Ladies did not travel, however this meant that coach Sandy Keith was kept busy rotating the side to ensure everyone got enough pitch time.First up were Stirling Wanderers who had an excellent season last year just missing out on the promotion spot. The game quickly fell into a pattern of the GCW girls pressing but the Stirling girls always dangerous on the counter attack. Despite both sides efforts it took a Janine Gammack corner to break the deadlock and edge the girls in black ahead.Just before half time Jenny Thompson swivelled in front of the keeper to place the ball home for a 2-0 lead. The second half got off to a whirlwind star with Siobhan Anthony scoring her first of five on the day to further enhance theGCW girls lead. Stirling were not to be beaten without a fight and they came straight back and reduced the defecit on the counter. This was to be the only goal against the GCW on the day as Siobhan Cowie and her defence proved very solid all day. Two further goals in the final ten minutes of play left the final score as 5-1 to GCW.The second game of the day was a local derby ( in Perth) against Bon Accord. The Bion Accord side travelled with only six players and this was their second game in a row so this would prove a tough mission against the strong "Girls in Black". The first half saw an adventurous GCW side continually pressing a resolute Bon Accord defence with little to show for their efforts until fie minutes from half time when a ball in from the right was deflected into the net by Jenny Thompson for the lead. The goal was hotly disputed by the Bon Accord girls but despite an umpires meeting on the halfway line the goal stood. Two minutes later teh GCW girls stretched tehir lead to 2-0 at half time. The second half saw the extra legss of the GCW girls outgun the tiring Bon Accord side. The second half had seven goals of which I cannot remember all of who scored but I think all were from open play from a continually dangerous GCW side.So halfway through the season the girls are top having scored a barrow load of goals. With Waverley and Hillhead still to play each other there is still a slim hope of promotion but lot will depend on producing this form week in and week out. However Merry Christmas to all.
