It was two years ago that the Ladies firsts indoor side won Division 3 with last day victories over their nearest challengers and history may be about to repeat itself this season, hopefully! Following yesterdays' gruelling 4 games in a day at DISC in Dundee, the girls came home with 3 wins and a draw. The upshot of all of this is that a further two wins on the final day will leave them at the top of the table and only goal difference could prevent the step up to Division 1.We all set off yesterday knowing the task ahead although feeling we had not been helped by Scottish Hockey's unprecedented decision to rearrange a fixture previously cancelled and force us to play it on the back of a 3 game day. However, despite the support from the other competing teams we knew there was no alternative but to play the four matches and hope we could see ourselves through.First game up was Stirling Wanderers who don't concede many goals and are a team who are always capable of an upset. A hastily re-arranged umpire was brought in as the scheduled umpire was not present and 8 minutes into the game and the girls went 1-0 down through a goal contested to be outside the circle. Not to be deterred, and parity was resumed when Jo Thomas converted a deflected corner just before half time. Early in the second half and the GCW girls took the lead which surely would mean them stretching away but no, back came Stirling who from a penalty corner won a penalty flick which was converted low down to Shonny's right hand side. Despite strong pressure it appeared nothing was to go the girls way and the game ended 2-2. Stirling yet again proving a very tough nut to crack. The second game up was Aberdeen Ladies and this was to prove one of two matches in the day when the girls really showed their true ability. 4-0 up at half time, the girls finally finished the game 10-1 winners.Game 3 was against BAMBC who again found the girls on hot form as they did prior to Christmas. The final score was to be 11-1 with some excellent indoor hockey being played throughout with even Janet Herd scoring. The final game of the day proved to be the nightmare everyone expected with disputes as to whether it should go ahead, who would umpire and why were we playing it. The game itself saw 12 very tired players trying to do their best in difficult circumstances and we can only be grateful that the 3 head injuries that occurred through tired tackling did not turn out to be worse than just bangs and bruises. The game itself finished 2-1 to the girls but it was by no means a classic. So to February the 14th at Stirling, and lets hope history repeats itself. All we ask is we bring our "A" game that day and lets make it exciting for everyone.
