As the second half of the outdoor season gets ready to explode into action, we have been working hard to bring you an action packed social scene this season. The social organisers this year are Rich Bedwell and Lisa Clyne, so please ask us if you have any questions about upcoming social events.  Although we’ve grown a lot over the last 5 or 6 years, we still really want to see everyone come along to our social events to spend some time together away from the hockey pitch.

First up we had the New Members Night on Saturday 6th September.  This was an occasion for everyone in the club to come along and meet the new members, as well as catch up with those guys/girls who you may not have seen for a while.  It seems that the new members haven’t been scared off!

Next on the social agenda was the GCW Golf Day on Sunday 14th September at Westhill Golf Club. After some tea/coffee and a bacon roll, we played 18 holes, before re-living the glory of our golf and adventures eating soup & sandwiches afterwards.  Some of the golf was remarkably considering many (most) players were out the night before, and certainly a good time was had by all!

A week later (Sunday 21 September), it was the turn of the Youth Section for a day out at the Deeside Activity Park.  The young guns (and some older “responsible” adults) got the chance to have a go at quad biking, archery and go-karting.  It was great to see all the kids getting stuck in, and no doubt some moments will be lasting memories.

The next “social” night was the Aberdeen Christmas Light Switch-On Parade.  Because many of the players in the club are household names (in their own homes!), the organisers have asked us to get involved in the parade.  Well, maybe they just need mugs to dress up and enjoy themselves, something at which we seem to be rather good!  It’s a good fundraiser for the club, and good fun.

The Christmas Night was on Saturday 6 December, and the lasting memory of the evening was definitely Jon Hogg’s dancing; you can’t teach moves like that!  Auntie Lorna cooked up a storm with some very tasty food, and everyone eventually made it on to the dance floor

Coming up soon is the Race Night on Saturday 28 February at The Sportsman’s Club.  Tickets are for sale so make sure you snap one up fast.  Unlike other race nights to which you may have been, GCW’s version features “real” horses which jockeys get to reel along the track.  Bidding for a jockey seat can get fierce, and it is certain to be a great night.  Lisa and Rich are still looking for sponsors for the races (£50 to have the race named after your company in the programme, and announced on the night), so get in touch if you can help.  See you there!

In the meantime, make sure you pop into our sponsors The Sportsman’s Club (on Queens Road) after training on Thursdays and after matches. “Informal” social nights often start off in the Sportsman’s on a Saturday afternoon!

Hopefully there will be something for everybody to enjoy. The club has a proud tradition of knowing how to enjoy the social side of hockey, and we aim to carry that through this season!
